What testing must solar water heaters undergo for ENERGY STAR?
No additional testing is required for ENERGY STAR certification beyond what is necessary for the solar collector or system under the OG-100 and OG-300 programs. To qualify for ENERGY STAR, a solar water heating system must be OG-300 certified. Systems are modeled using TRNSYS software package to determine their SUEF rating for qualification.
Is ENERGY STAR Certification required in the US?
No – But you may need it for some incentives. ENERGY STAR certification is not mandated by the U.S. Federal Government or building codes, BUT several incentive programs for solar water heaters do require the certification to qualify. And many manufacturers choose to pursue ENERGY STAR certification for the strong brand recognition among consumers.
